DOT and marijuana

If you hold a safety-sensitive position regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), including under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), this is an important reminder:

Cannabis use is NOT permitted—regardless of state legalization.

✔ DOT regulations are federal and supersede state laws

✔ Any presence of THC metabolites in a urine drug screen = verified positive test

✔ This results in an immediate DOT violation

This includes:
• Recreational marijuana
• Medical marijuana (even with a valid prescription)
• Edibles, vapes, oils, and other THC-containing products

There are no exceptions under current DOT regulations.

A positive test can lead to:
• Removal from safety-sensitive duties
• Referral to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
• Required return-to-duty process and follow-up testing

Bottom line: If you are in a DOT-regulated role, the safest and only compliant choice is to abstain from cannabis use.

If you have questions about compliance or testing requirements, consult your employer or a qualified SAP.

Stay informed. Stay compliant. Stay working.
